In a poll of 1,000 US adults it
is found that 28% have not read a book in the past one year. Blaming no one
personally, thanks should be given to screens that surround us.
Reading a book is not just about
completing a high school assignment or an entertainment.
A study has shown that reading
books can strengthen your ability to read minds.
The study was published in the
journal Science, and says that reading sharpens our ability which is known as ‘theory
of mind’ that is described as the ability to read the feelings and thoughts of
the others.
This is not the only benefit that
comes from being a bookworm.
Here are six more:
- Reading and Relaxation are Directly Proportional
Reading, according to a research
at the University of Sussex in 2009, is more effective in reducing stress than
enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, listening to music or taking a walk.
By measuring the muscle tension
and heart rate, the participants of the study felt relaxed in just 6 minutes
when they started reading book.
Regardless of the type of book
you are reading, you move away from everyday stress and worries as you read a
book and get engrossed in the imaginary world created by the author.
- It could Keep Your Brain Sharp
As per a research published in
the online issue of the journal Neurology, reading can keep your brain in good
shape even when you reach old age.
The study showed, more mental activity,
such as reading, resulted in slower memory decline.
According to study author Robert
S. Wilson of the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, exercising your
brain starting from childhood to old age, will keep the brain in good health even
in old age.
- Reading May Help in Good Sleep
Many sleep experts have
recommended to de-stress your mind before you go to bed for sleep. A great way
to do so is to start a reading habit when you go to bed.
Research has indicated that
bright lights even from television screen give signals to brain that it is time
to wake up. Reading a book in dim light prepares your mind for sound sleep.
