What is The Joy and Science of the New Grand parenting? - Book Review

Becoming Grandma: The Joy and Science of the New Grand Parenting- Book Review

Lesley Stahl worked as a reporter for four decades. During her working tenure she interviewed heads of state, covered happenings at the White House, and presented various stories at 60 minutes.

According to Lesley Stahl, the most transforming and vivid experience was that of becoming a grandmother. The jolt of joy that hit her was most unexpected and intense, something that can be compared to a news flash.

This new experience inspired her to explore and investigate it, which culminated in a book “Becoming Grandma: The Joy and Science of the New Grand parenting”. Using the skills that she acquired during ‘60 Minutes’, she tries to find out how becoming a grandmother can change the life of a woman.

During her exploratory expedition she interviewed numerous women, starting from the proverbial the woman next door, to her celebrity friends like Whoopi Goldberg and Diane Sawyer, her colleague.

Apart from talking to grandmothers, she also interviewed doctors and scientist putting forward questions as to what sort of psychological changes takes place in a woman when she becomes a grandmother.

Lesley Stahl also talked to Anthropologists to understand what grandmother means in evolutionary terms. She than questioned psychiatrists to find out what effects do grandchildren have on grandfathers and grandmothers.

In the book, Becoming Grandma: The Joy and Science of the New Grand parenting, shares stories about her personal life as a grandmother of two children, Jordan and Chloe. She talks about how she has started looking at her daughter, Taylor, in a different manner, and her husband, Aaron, has moved into a new role as a grandfather.

In this time when Baby Boomer are moving towards becoming grandparents in large numbers, when a grandmother is in the race to become the next president of the United States, and when young parents are looking for helpful tips on raising their children, the book “Becoming Grandma: The Joy and Science of the New Grand parenting” from Lesley Stahl has come just at the right time.
