What is I See You? by Clare Mackintosh - Book Review

Commuting is as normal a part of our life as is breathing. It is something about which we do not think much. This almost daily chore happens on its own. A seat by the window if you are lucky, some juggling on a paper, or iPad, let us through it within no time.

During this claustrophobic and sweaty tedium what we don’t realize is that someone might be watching us, and that too, making a note of every move we make.
In a psychological thriller book “I See You”, Clare Mackintosh has picked up just this creepy scenario.
Zoe Walker is in her forties and is a mother of two teenage kids. She commutes daily from her home to office, a job that she doesn’t really like. One fine day, she got a seat and decided to scan through a paper when she saw a photograph of her in an advertisement.
The advertisement displayed in a less savory column doesn’t mention anything except for a website address – findtheone.com. And just like one would expect, it throws her world upside down.
When she gets back home, her family tries to console her that it is nothing except for a freaky coincidence. The photograph may resemble her, but it is not her at all.
But, in her heart she knows that the truth is not what she is trying to convince herself on. After some time, Zoe Walker saw the same advertisement in the newspaper, but the woman in it was someone else.
Some days later Zoe learned that the same woman was found strangled in Muswell Hill. Zoe wasted no time in calling police. Kelly Swift was the detective she talked to. Kelly earned some bad name because of a heinous misconduct. During an interview, Kelly had whacked a child molester.
Kelly was looking for a chance that can revive her credibility. After being given a lead from Zoe, citing classified ad, Kelly gets down on her work for a murder investigation.
With the help of some computer experts, it was quickly known that the website findtheone.com is updated every week with a profile of a new woman every time, and the same woman is also seen in the classified advertisement.
After paying a good amount of money, visitors to the website are given details about the woman who is seen in the advertisement, including, what she wears, where she sits on the train, which ticket machine is used by her at the station, and after having all these minute details, visitors are than asked to rate the woman as easy, moderate or difficult.
Isn’t that dating tool bizarre? Findtheone.com, described itself as a means to bring commuters together, by making introduction between commuters.
The story crafted by Clare Mackintosh in the book “I See You” is quite complex and convincing. There are enough teasers in the story which makes both the women and even the readers feel suspicious about everyone who is attached with their lives.
